Taylor Burciaga grew up in Toledo and attended Bowling Green State University where she earned a Bachelors degree in interpersonal communication and public relations. Growing up Mexican American, her parents strongly emphasized involvement in their community through volunteering and participating in community activities and events. After college, Taylor returned to the Toledo area where she worked in the nonprofit sector. At that point she was appointed to the Toledo City Council, both the youngest female and the youngest Latino to hold a seat on City Council in Toledo's history. Eventually she decided her passion was to focus on doing good things for the community rather than politicking.
She retuned to the nonprofit sector and is now the Program Coordinator at the Maumee Chamber of Commerce, where she is able to help small businesses grow and succeed. "I love event planning; that's a passion of mine, so I get to do the best of both worlds," Taylor says. "I love to help businesses succeed, and letting a small business owner succeed at his or her job."

Taylor loves Maumee because it is a safe, friendly, walkable community, the kind of place where people can safely walk around at night and people know their neighbors.

Dining & Drinking
Taylor loves the Degage Jazz Café. During the workday it is a great place for lunch, and at night it turns into a "really cool" live jazz bar with live music Thursdays through Sundays.

The Village Idiot, right in uptown Maumee, is a bar that seems to have been there forever. Taylor says they have the best pizza in town with rock music at night. It's a locals spot with a lot of regulars, and on weekends in gets packed. Taylor and her coworkers also enjoy going to Granite City Brewing Company, a brewery located inside the Shops at Fallen Timbers that is also a full restaurant, for work meetings.

Clara J's at 219 is a tearoom located in a historic house that also has galleries with funky handmade items from local artists you won't find anywhere else. Moms and daughters go together to sit down and enjoy a full tea course. Maumee Valley Chocolate and Candy, does a lot of retro candy and makes all their own fudge and chocolate on premises. "It smells amazing inside!" Taylor says.

Retail Therapy
The Shops at Fallen Timbers is an outdoor mall with a movie theatre. The mall does a lot of special programming, like decorating for Christmas with an ice skating rink, horse-drawn carriages, and individual stores all decorated for the holidays.

Prism Glass Works was opened by a local Maumee woman. The store sells a variety of glass art, jewelry, and other pieces, and they also teach glassworks classes where people make their own pieces to take home.

Arts & Culture
The Maumee Indoor Theatre is a renovated historic theatre that is part of historic Maumee. It still operates as a theatre; they built a stage and host musicals, community plays, and other local shows.

The Great Outdoors
Maumee has rich history with war, particularly the nearly bloodless Toledo War and Fort Meigs, Ohio's War of 1812 Battlefield. The parks and trails system is incorporated with the different battlefields in the area, and people can get historic tours through the parks. Rolf Park is the main city park with a city pool, soccer fields, a softball diamond, and volleyball courts. The Toe Path Park has walking trails along the river where you can often spot deer. Maumee has 12 parks total.

Annual Events
Maumee has a Summer Fair every August with a parade that kicks off the event. The annual 4th of July celebration is a big community picnic with games, music, and fireworks. Also in the summer, Rock the Block features live bands at night and a beer garden. In the winter, all the businesses decorate for the holidays, there is a holiday light parade, and a lot of activities for kids including Santa's elves hidden in windows all throughout downtown Maumee and Santa's mailbox in the Maumee Indoor Theatre.
